Goal Setting

What can we teach you about goal setting that you don’t already know?  The answer is nothing; after all I’m sure on a day to day, week to week and month to month basis you regularly set, track and hit many goals.  Now you may be thinking; “not me”.  But let’s look at things a bit more closely.

Have you ever: set out to meet a friend, taken the kids to school, gone to work, taken a holiday, celebrated a yearly event, gone shopping or just taken out the rubbish (or trash)?  If you have done any of these things or similar, then you already know how to set track and hit your goals.

You see, in order to do any of the above tasks you have to make a plan; (even if it’s a tiny subconscious plan in the back of your mind) set a deadline and check to see how you’re doing along the way.

For instance, if you arranged to meet a friend, hopefully you both would have planned where and when you want to meet up.  When you set out on your journey you don’t just get on the bus and in your car and say to yourself “I’ll just drive and if I see my friend I’ll stop off”.  Or let’s say you are going to work; once again you don’t say to yourself “Oh I’ll just go on my journey and if I see my place of work I’ll stop off.  No of course you don’t, you set out with a specific journey in mind, hopefully you leave early enough to ensure that you arrive on time and you monitor how you are doing along the way.

If there is a road block or cancelled train service, you adjust your original journey in order to ensure you arrive at your destination.  The most important thing is to get there on time, because as you know with many things, the later you are, the more of an inconvenience you create.

Now you may be saying, “What does all of this have to do with Goal Setting?”  The answer is: Everything!

A goal can be described as “The object of a person’s effort or ambition, aim or destination.  Something that you are moving towards.  Something that requires specific action and monitoring to reach or obtain an agreed or desired outcome”.

Now going back to what I said earlier, I believe you regularly set, track and hit many goals, even if you don’t realise it yourself.    Most people do more goal setting than they realise.  Every time you make a specific plan and start taking action to accomplish it, you are setting a goal.

We all possess tremendous goal setting abilities.  We have the abilities to do things right now that we don’t even realise.  But sadly, most people use this ability to do day to day, week to week and month to month, mundane things.  Do you know that most people put far more efforts and planning into their next holiday, party or work assignments than they do planning their life?  Do you know that you could actually do more, have more and achieve more than you have right now?

Think about this for a while.  Where are YOU going to be in the next three, six, nine or twelve months?  What does 2008 really hold for you?  What do you really want to be, do, have, share become or achieve?  If time and money was not an object, what would you do that you are not doing now?  If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you attempt?  What is your goal in life?

Take some time out to answer these questions; you may be surprised at the answers.

So what can we teach you about goal setting?  Nothing that your incredible mind doesn’t already know and use.   What we can teach you, is how to greatly enhance these skills to get much more out of life than you are getting now

Start now:

  • Make a commitment to yourself to learn, change and grow and get much more out of life
  • Go back to those questions I just asked you and take some time out to honestly answer them.  The one that may give you the most trouble is “If you knew you couldn’t fail what would you attempt?  However, honest answers to this question is very important
  • Set yourself some goals:  Here are some areas to get you started:  Personal Growth / Self Esteem / Business / Job / Career / Financial / Health / Enjoyment / Contribution / Relationship / Spiritual / Other
  • Always have a date for their accomplishment and use a good system for tracking how you are progressing
  • A good idea is to get a running mate and set up an accountability system to help encourage you to reach your more difficult goals
  • Get around other people who are like minded; people who want to move on in life and accomplish things.
  • Get yourself a good coach or attend one of our TLSA workshops that can greatly enhance your skills and abilities in goal setting
  • Above all, believe in yourself.  Most people know what to do but they don’t do what they know.  You see; there’s a giant asleep inside of every man, woman, boy and girl and when that giant awakes, tremendous things happen.

We believe in you.
